In vitro and animal study results indicate that magnesium improves bone mineralization by enhancing osteoblast activity while reducing osteoclast activity. In individuals with low magnesium status, magnesium intake improves bone mineralization during skeletal development, which could reduce osteoporosis risk in later years. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, daily magnesium supplementation for 1 year significantly improved hip bone mineral content in healthy adolescent girls with insufficient dietary magnesium intake. Participants were randomized to receive either placebo treatment or 300 mg of magnesium from magnesium oxide. At the end of the treatment period, mean hip bone mineral content was approximately 3% greater in the magnesium group in comparison with the placebo group.
